We've been wanting to go on a long sailing trip. So when my friend Veronique came for a visit, we decided to sail to Martha's Vineyard.
Sailing under Mt Hope Bridge
Veronique & Chris
Friday's sail was quite long - down the Sakonnet river, past this lighthouse, and then up Buzzards Bay to Padanaram. It was Chris' birthday, so he had quite the amazing day!
We made it to the Padanaram harbor just before dark. Whew
I helped sail some, but Chris did most of the captaining.
On Saturday, we had a nice sail to Edgartown. Here is Chris, sailing into the harbor
Absolutely beautiful! There is nothing like sailing into town. Much much better than driving :)
Picture time
Edgartown Lighthouse
We love the architecture in Edgartown. Especially these garages :)
Saturday night, we had Sushi! It was delicious!
Sunday morning - coffee time!
We love the vineyard & the views!
We rented bicycles and rode them to Oak Bluffs - about 7 miles away from Edgartown. A beautiful ride along the ocean.
Once we got to Oak Bluffs, we had to go by The Sweet Life Cafe. It's where we had our wedding reception in 2005! Different owners now, but still looking good.
We also took a walk through the cottages - famous in Oak Bluffs.
And Ocean Cliff park
And the Oak Bluffs Lighthouse. We had wedding pictures taken here
We kept on trucking, and rode our bikes the 3 long miles to Vineyard Haven (also known as Tisbury). How cool that they had a car show on Main Street!
It was a nice treat for Chris.
We also had to stop by the Black Dog Tavern
Nice yachts - must have room for the helicopter!
We eventually headed back to Edgartown. We had to have the bikes back by 6:00. Dinner time, then back to the sailboat! This is the Edgartown Yacht Club.
We awoke bright & early on Monday morning to ... fog. Ugh. We waited a couple hours & the fog lifted a little. Visibility was about a half mile.
V taking her turn at the helm! By the time we sailed by Oak Bluffs, the fog had lifted (well mostly, visibility was 3 miles)
Having fun on the way home
It took us 9 hours to sail from Edgartown to Portsmouth. We had good wind & we flew!
An absolutely wonderful weekend!!!
