We did it! Our first Ultra run! We've been talking about it for a couple years, and we finally did it. Yay!
The race was in FL - so while we were visiting Chris' mom, we took a day to do the race. We actually didn't train specifically for it. Our longest run was only 13 miles (and this was 31), but we have been biking a lot, so we definitely had some endurance. We were planning on just doing the 16 mile course, but it was sold out, so we signed up for the 50K, and said we would bail on lap 1 if it got too tuff. The course was beautiful - woodsy and only a couple technical spots. Lap 1 was really nice - the sun stayed hidden, but it did pop out for lap 2, and I was wondering why I thought the race was so shaded the first lap... Lap 1 went well- they had aid stations about every 5 miles and they came up pretty quickly. The last 5 miles was pretty hilly. We took about 3 minutes (should have taken a couple more) to fill up with fluid & change socks (Steph) at the end of Lap 1 (16 miles). We took off for lap 2 a little stiff (it's so hard to stop sometimes). The first mile was pretty rooty, so we walked a little extra - but it soon turned back to sand & dirt. My hips & calves definitely started complaining around mile 20, but we kept chugging. It was actually nice to not know exactly what mile you were at all the time - it was a refreshing way to race. The last 5 miles were pretty difficult - the hills - ouch. But we finished - - yay!
We were happy to see the finish line & get our mug :)
We really liked the experience. There was no racing - just a bunch of people running the trails. Laid back friendly runners. These 2 were finishing the 50 miler - wowzer!
My calves started seizing after we finished, so I had to sit :)
We definitely got dirty! and it took a couple days for my hips to like me again. But all in all, we recovered pretty quickly. Guess we'll have to do another one!
