We arrived Thursday evening for a Sunday race.
Thursday - just down the street - they had live music, right on a lake :)
Friday, we checked in for the race and walked around Lake Placid - stopped by the Olympic Ice Rink :)
had a nice dinner on the Ausable river
and some ice cream :)
On Saturday, we decided to take a gondola ride up Whiteface mountain
It was beautiful!
Going back down - the road on the right is one that we ride in the race (it looks like a river b/c it does follow a river :))
On Monday - after the race, we had a yummy breakfast and then went to High Falls Gorge
Going up and down these steps the day after a 13 hour race probably wasn't the best idea...
But the views were worth it!
And then we headed to back to Lake Placid to say goodbye :)
There was a huge fire on Saturday night - this brick building burned. It caused a lot of issues for those athletes staying nearby (they had to evacuate a city block for more than 6 hours). Some athletes didn't get back to their hotels until after 11 pm. Not the stress you want before a big race! Fortunately, we stayed out of town (we registered late), otherwise we would have been one of the groups evacuated. Whew! The fire caused another issue too. The run off from the fire hoses went right into Mirror Lake - where we swim for the race. They had to do testing to make sure that the water was safe for the athletes. They ok'd it just an hour before the race started!
Then it was time to get packed up and head back to reality.
We let our wetsuits and race clothes dry in the sun. It was so nice not to bring swamp clothes home with us!!
